How to Make Your iPhone Screen Darker Than Dark

The iPhone’s lowest brightness setting is still quite bright if you’re in a dark room. But there’s a way to get it even darker.

I learned recently that this trick, which I thought was well-known, is not ubiquitous, so here it is. This is the iPhone method; there are probably many ways to do this on Android.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Accessibility, then Zoom, then Zoom Filter.
  3. Select Low Light.
  4. At the bottom of the Zoom Filter screen, drag Maximum Zoom Level all the way left. This step is not strictly necessary, but it keeps your iPhone usable if you accidentally engage the actual zoom mode and can’t figure out how to get out of it (the trick is: double-tap three fingers at the same time).
  5. Tap the back arrow (top left).
  6. Tap Accessibility Shortcut (under General, near the bottom).
  7. Select Zoom (they’re in alphabetical order by default).

Now triple-clicking the power button (top-left button) will apply a darkened filter over your whole screen, reducing brightness even beyond the lowest brightness setting. To get your brightness back, just triple-click the power button again.
