Plotting Word Usage In the Bible

Every few months for the past several years, I’ve returned to this idea of getting an intuitive understanding of the vocabulary of different Biblical authors. I’m not sure there’s exegetical value, but every time I heard something like “Mark says ‘immediately’ a lot” I wanted to investigate.

I’ve had some success in the past, but yesterday and today I assigned Codex the task of building me a series of web tools to interrogate the text like this. Here’s a chart I’ve wanted for literally years.

This tool is blazing fast, space- and compute-efficient, allows searching any loaded translation, and lets you pick the books to chart, assuming you don’t want all of them.

Turns out… yep, Mark says “immediately” a lot.

(Next step: get this tool online so other people can play with it as much as I have today.)

A chart displays occurrences of the word “immediately” across the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, indicated by dots along a percentage timeline.
